Abdul Hamid II was born in Topkapı Palace in Constantinople (modern Turkey) during Ottoman Empire, on 21 September 1842. He was the son of Sultan Abdülmecid I and one of his many wives, the Valide Sultan Tirimüjgan (16 August 1819 – Constantinople, Feriye Palace, 3 October 1852), originally named Virjin.
